Ranked by what students actually say, the best English schools in Malta in 2026 are BELS Gozo (5.0 on Google, 284 reviews), ACE English Malta (4.8, 2,586 reviews) and English Path (4.8, 1,318 reviews). Expect €200-260 per week for General English; the cheapest licensed school is Gateway at €155 all-in.

I live in St Julian's, which means I live in the middle of Malta's English-teaching industry. Half the island's schools are within a 20-minute walk of my flat, and from June to September the streets around Paceville fill with students carrying branded lanyards. Everyone who visits me eventually asks the same question: which school is actually good?

This page answers it differently from the agency sites that dominate this search. Those lists rank the schools that pay them commission, usually eight or ten big names, and skip the fees. Here you get all 32 schools on the ELT Council register, ranked by the ratings thousands of real students left on Google, with each school's published 2026 prices and the extra fees the headline rate hides. I earn nothing from any school on this list.

How this ranking works

Simple and checkable. I took the full July 2026 register of licensed schools, looked up each school's public Google rating and review count (as of July 2026), and sorted by rating, with review count breaking ties. Schools with fewer than 50 reviews, or without a listing of their own, appear in the full table further down but aren't ranked; five reviews tell you nothing. Prices come from each school's own published 2026 rate card, checked in July 2026. Where a school only quotes on request, the table says so.

Google ratings aren't perfect. Schools ask happy students to leave reviews, and a 4.6 school with 900 reviews probably isn't meaningfully worse than a 4.7 school with 70. But across thousands of reviews the signal is real, and it's the students' verdict rather than mine or a sales agency's.

The top schools, one by one

1. BELS Gozo: 5.0 (284 reviews)

A perfect score over 284 reviews is remarkable, and the explanation is the setting as much as the teaching. The school sits in Kercem, a quiet village on Gozo, takes adults only (18+), and caps classes at 12. Students who choose Gozo are self-selecting for calm immersion over nightlife, and the reviews read accordingly. General English is €250 per week plus €55 registration and a €30 summer supplement. BELS holds Eaquals and ALTO accreditation and accepts Bildungsurlaub, the German paid-study-leave scheme. If you want to study rather than party, this is my pick.

2. EEC-ITIS: 4.9 (70 reviews)

The wildcard near the top. EEC-ITIS in San Gwann is a combined tourism-and-languages institute rather than a classic language school, and it publishes no course prices; you request a quote. The 4.9 rating comes from a smaller pool of mostly mature students and Erasmus+ groups. Worth a quote request if you're a teacher or professional on EU funding, less obvious for a standard study-holiday.

3. ACE English Malta: 4.8 (2,586 reviews)

The highest-rated school at scale, by a wide margin: no other school in Malta has anywhere near 2,586 reviews at 4.8. ACE sits inside the Bay Street complex in St Julian's, runs separate adult (16-29) and 30+ streams, and carries Eaquals accreditation. Published 2026 rates are €230 per week for the standard group course, plus €60 registration and €45 materials, with a modest €25 weekly summer supplement. When people ask me for one safe default recommendation in the St Julian's area, this is it.

4. English Path Malta: 4.8 (1,318 reviews)

The newest big operator, part of the GUS education group, in the West Block near Paceville. The 4.8 over 1,300+ reviews is impressive for a school that only arrived in Malta recently. The catch: prices are quote-only, which makes comparison annoying, and group-wide accreditations mostly attach to its other campuses. Get a written quote with all fees before comparing it against the schools with public rate cards.

5. Atlas Language School: 4.7 (253 reviews)

The accreditation heavyweight. Atlas in Pembroke holds Eaquals, IALC, ALTO and English UK memberships plus Bildungsurlaub recognition, more independent quality marks than any other school on the island. General English is €200 per week (1-8 weeks) plus €75 registration, €40 materials and a €50 summer supplement. Pembroke is a residential area one bus stop past St Julian's: quieter streets, same coastline.

6. Clubclass: 4.6 (927 reviews)

The most-reviewed school in the 4.6 group, on a self-contained campus in Swieqi with residence accommodation on site, which students consistently praise for convenience. €205 per week for the standard course, €50 one-time resource fee, and the island's steepest summer supplement at €84 per week from mid-June to late August (waived on bookings of 8+ weeks). Eaquals-accredited. Do the summer arithmetic before booking July here; the supplement changes the comparison.

7. IELS Malta: 4.6 (565 reviews)

One of the island's oldest and largest schools, in Sliema. The 2026 price list puts General English at €285 per week for short stays (dropping to €240 on long bookings), plus €55 registration, €35 materials per course and a €50 summer supplement that runs 22 June to 4 September. It also runs a dedicated 30+ track. You're paying a premium for scale and Sliema's seafront location; the rating says students find it worth it.

8. Maltalingua: 4.6 (457 reviews)

My favourite pricing model on the island: €234 per week with no registration fee and materials, tests and certificates included. The only extra is the €50 summer supplement (22 June to 28 August). A British-run school in St Julian's with a rooftop pool, capped at 12 per class, Eaquals-accredited. What you see on the price page is what you pay, which after reading 30 other rate cards I've come to appreciate.

9. EC Malta: 4.6 (435 reviews)

The biggest global brand with a Malta flagship in St Julian's, including a separate EC 30+ centre. Pricing is "from €300 per week", a starting figure rather than a fixed rate, so treat it as an opening bid and get a full quote. Eaquals and English UK accredited, max class of 14. The professional polish is real; so is the price.

10. BELS Malta: 4.6 (232 reviews)

The main-island sibling of the table-topper, in St Paul's Bay in the north. Same 2026 price list: €250 per week, €55 registration, €30 materials, €30 summer supplement. St Paul's Bay is cheaper to live in than Sliema or St Julian's, and the school shares the Gozo campus's Eaquals and ALTO accreditation. A good compromise if you want BELS quality with more going on than Kercem offers.

Just below the top ten sit Easy School of Languages in Valletta (4.6, 203 reviews, with a Golden Age 50+ programme), Malta University Language School in Msida (4.6, 127 reviews, the University of Malta's own school and the obvious pick if you're aiming at a degree here), and Cavendish School in Valletta (4.6, 113 reviews), whose €219 winter rate is one of the island's quiet bargains.

Which school fits your situation

Tightest budget. Gateway School of English in San Gwann, €155 per week including registration and materials, with no summer supplement at all. Its 4.4 rating over 419 reviews is solid rather than spectacular, but nothing else licensed comes close on price, and the rate falls to €110 per week on bookings of 8 weeks or more. San Gwann is an ordinary residential town, which also means cheaper rent than the coast.

No hidden fees. Maltalingua (€234, everything included except the summer supplement) and Gateway (€155, everything included, full stop). With every other school, add the registration fee, materials and the seasonal supplement to the headline rate before comparing.

Adults 30 and over. The dedicated 30+ programmes with separate classrooms are EC 30+, IELS 30+, and the BELS schools; Easy School of Languages runs a Golden Age programme aimed at 50+. ETI Malta in St Julian's teaches adult professionals exclusively, quote-only. If sitting in class with 19-year-olds is your idea of hell, these exist precisely for you.

Small classes. Alpha School in St Paul's Bay caps at 10 students (4.5, 78 reviews, €220 per week on its still-current 2025 rate card). Most schools cap at 12; the big brands run up to 14-17.

Exam preparation and university routes. Nearly every school sells IELTS or Cambridge prep, so choose on general quality. The exception worth naming: Malta University Language School, run by the University of Malta at its Msida campus, whose courses are the natural on-ramp if your plan is studying in Malta beyond English.

What about EF, Sprachcaffe and the other big names?

Three kinds of school don't appear in the ranking above, for three different reasons.

Quote-only global brands. EF's Malta campus in St Julian's rates 4.5 over 1,342 reviews, a genuinely strong score at volume, but publishes no Malta price list; everything depends on programme, season and length. English Path and EC are semi-transparent, as noted above. There's nothing wrong with quote-only pricing, but insist on a line-itemised quote (tuition, registration, materials, seasonal supplements, transfers) so you can compare against the public rate cards here.

Sub-threshold listings. A Class Academy (4.5, 39 reviews), BSC Learners (4.8, 24), ETI (4.4, 24), Future Focus (4.1, 40) and Cross College (4.0, 5) all sit under the 50-review bar. Cross College deserves a note: it's new, and its €150 per week flat rate would make it Malta's cheapest school, but the site doesn't state lessons per week, so I can't compare it like-for-like. Ask before booking.

The outlier. Sprachcaffe in Pembroke carries the register's lowest rating, 3.9 over 201 reviews. Its campus-with-apartments model is genuinely convenient, but the reviews skew critical enough that I'd read a page of them before booking, something I'd suggest for any school regardless of where it ranks here.

Every licensed school compared

The full register, ranked schools first. All 2026 prices are the school's published General English rate (20 lessons per week, short stay, tuition only) as of July 2026.

The fees that aren't in the headline price

Malta's schools compete on the weekly rate and bury the rest, so here's the arithmetic that actually decides which school is cheaper. Registration fees run €0-84. Materials add €25-50 unless included. And between mid-June and late August most schools add a summer supplement of €20-84 per week.

Two worked weeks in July make the point. Clubclass at €205 looks cheaper than Maltalingua at €234, but two summer weeks at Clubclass cost €628 (tuition, resource fee, twice the €84 supplement) against €568 at Maltalingua. Gateway, at €310 for the same two weeks with nothing added, undercuts both. The headline rate told you the opposite of the truth.

Tuition is also only about a third of what a study stay costs once accommodation and living expenses land. Lessons, long stays and other fine print

A "lesson" in Malta is usually 45 minutes, not an hour. The standard General English 20 course therefore means 15 classroom hours a week, typically 09:00 to just after noon. Schools rarely shout about this, and it's worth knowing before you compare a €200 Malta week against a course elsewhere quoted in clock hours.

Weekly rates also drop hard on long bookings, which the tables above (short-stay rates) don't show. Gateway falls from €155 to €110 per week at 8 weeks and €100 beyond 24; Clubclass from €205 to €165 at 8 weeks, which also waives its summer supplement; IELS from €285 to €240 past 21 weeks. If you're considering a long stay, ask every shortlisted school for its long-course rate rather than multiplying the weekly price.

Two audience notes. Parents: most large schools run summer junior programmes, EF takes students from age 12 in its teen streams, and Alpha in St Paul's Bay even operates a playschool, but junior packages are priced as bundles (course, accommodation, supervision) and belong to a different comparison than the adult rates on this page. How to check a school is licensed

Every legitimate English school in Malta holds a licence from the ELT Council, the government regulator; 32 campus schools hold one as of July 2026. If a school isn't on that register, walk away. For non-EU students this is not a formality: your visa application stands on an acceptance letter from a licensed school. Beyond the licence, FELTOM is the local industry association, and marks like Eaquals or IALC are independent international audits of teaching quality, which is why the tables above list them.

So which school should you book?

If you pushed me for single answers: ACE English Malta for a first stay in the thick of things, backed by the largest body of student opinion on the island. Maltalingua if you value knowing the total price from the start. Gateway if the budget is tight, and the difference funds several extra weeks of Malta. BELS Gozo if you're serious about the English and want the version of Malta without a nightclub in it.

And whichever way you lean, book directly with the school after getting one line-itemised quote, check the licence on the register, and if you're coming in July or August, do the supplement arithmetic first. The rankings here are the students' collective verdict as of July 2026; the rate cards change yearly, so treat the prices as this year's snapshot rather than gospel.
